Fear is a natural and healthy response which we all have when faced with danger - so that we’re alerted - and because of certain hormones released into our bloodstream, we can either run away from something (flight) - stay and argue (fight) or just do nothing (freeze). [See ‘stress and anxiety’ session for more on this] Phobias are different. Phobias develop when a person’s subconscious creates an unrealistic or exaggerated fear around a certain situation or object which can severely restrict their life in some way. Phobias are learned responses we plant in our minds often in a protecting way and if the phobia ‘plants’ itself in the mind, then it can be uprooted very successfully too. Hypnotherapy can help you unlearn the fear response, build up your exposure to the phobia, and ease any associated anxieties very well. Specific phobias. If the source of your specific phobia is a thing you don’t see or have to experience very often then maybe it’s not much of a problem but if you have to face your phobia on a day-to-day basis, then obviously you’re much more effected because your phobia may be having a large impact on your life... Complex phobias often surround more everyday activities and can impact a person much more than ..say... a fear of reptiles (specific phobia). Complex phobias develop when we’re adults and stem often from deep-rooted anxiety about a particular situation or circumstance. Two of the most common complex phobias are Agoraphobia and Social phobia. With all phobias, the aim of Hypnotherapy is to communicate with your subconscious to help you change the way you think, change the way you feel, alter your perception in a very beneficial way and change how you behave towards your phobia, be it specific or complex. I will talk you through this step by step, getting you to relax yourself into a very focussed but calm and relaxed state. You’ll be in control the whole time, knowing exactly what’s going on and in your own time.
